Survey on Senior Health Reveals Why Social Security is So Crucial

Here at the Council for Retirement Security, we focus primarily on the topics of Social Security and senior health.

We believe these two subjects are of crucial importance to retirement and those nearing this point in life. It’s also true that these two subjects are connected to one another.

Social Security functions as a lifeline to help seniors afford their daily costs. The data shows that one cost seniors are most concerned about is the cost of maintaining their health as they get older.

Survey Shows Health Costs Are Seniors’ Top Concerns

A poll from the University of Michigan asked seniors about their top health-related concerns. While access to care was an important issue, the cost of care ranked at the top.

Specifically, the top three spots on the survey belonged to cost-related topics. Seniors are most concerned about the cost of medical care, home care/assisted living, and prescription medicines. It’s telling that these issues all revolve around financial stability, and they easily took the first few spots in this poll.

The results of this survey point to various conclusions. Some say it’s a commentary on how the healthcare system needs to be improved. Others say it’s a testament to how inflation continues to drive up costs, including ones that are already traditionally high.

Both these points have merit. However, we believe this survey is further proof that seniors need higher Social Security cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). By raising benefits to where they should be, adjusted for inflation, seniors will have more money to cover these and other important costs.

Will you help us to make this a reality? Sign our Social Security Lock-Box Petition and urge policymakers to make retirees a priority. After all, we’ve all paid into this program and deserve to be paid back fairly.
