As of now, about one percent of Social Security recipients still receive paper checks. However, by September 30, 2025, all payments will be processed electronically and paper checks will be a thing of the past.
The move to paperless Social Security payments will have many benefits, according to the Social Security Administration. The organization says the move will improve the speed at which beneficiaries receive their payments. In addition, it will reduce instances of fraud and loss, both by cutting back on government costs and making payment processing more secure.
The SSA is encouraging seniors to enroll in direct deposit or opt for a Direct Express® card. Seniors can update payment methods via their my Social Security account. The SSA is also sending out notices, including information with checks, to inform beneficiaries on the change.
