A California man is facing serious theft charges, with the numbers amounting to over $30,000 in total.

His victim allegedly had her Social Security benefits compromised. Preliminary reports suggest it was in the category of wire fraud, which is popular for scamming individuals of their retirement benefits.

The man reportedly told the woman her benefits were in danger of being compromised, which tricked her into turning them over in the first place.

Such instances of fraud are all too common. How can you stay safe?

If you believe there’s an issue with your benefits, contact the Social Security Administration. They can verify if any issues are present. If you believe a scam to be in effect, you can also call their fraud line at 1-800-269-0271.
