New Policy Aims to Improve SSA Identity Verification Requirements

In early 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) implemented a significant policy change affecting beneficiaries.

The SSA introduced stricter identity verification requirements. Initially, all applicants were mandated to verify their identity in person at a field office. However, the policy was later adjusted to allow individuals applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to complete applications over the phone.

Others are still required to apply online or visit a field office. Additionally, new phone technology was introduced to detect potential fraud, with flagged accounts possibly necessitating in-person verification. Advocates of this policy say it will help prevent fraud, thereby strengthening Social Security as a whole.
