Washington, D.C. — With Social Security facing a projected 20% benefit cut by 2035, the Council for Retirement Security has taken decisive action to protect the financial future of America’s retirees.
On behalf of its 590,000 grassroots members, the Council delivered 102,084 signed petitions to Congressional leaders this week, demanding immediate passage of the Social Security Lock-Box Act.
Founded in 2008 by retirement advocate Rita Smith, the Council for Retirement Security is a national non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Social Security for current and future retirees.
With an active presence in 48 states, the Council empowers citizens to speak out on the importance of safeguarding the Social Security Trust Fund.
“Americans have paid into the Social Security system their entire working lives with the promise of a secure retirement,” said Rita Smith, Founder of the Council for Retirement Security. “That promise is now at risk, and Congress must act without delay. The Lock-Box Act is a critical step toward ensuring the Trust Fund is protected and used solely for its intended purpose: paying earned Social Security benefits.”
The Social Security Trustees recently warned that the Trust Fund reserves will be depleted by 2035, triggering an automatic 20-percent across-the-board cut in benefits if Congress fails to act.
The Social Security Lock-Box Act would prohibit politicians from raiding the Trust Fund for unrelated government spending and ensure that every dollar goes toward honoring America’s commitment to its seniors.
The delivery of these 102,084 petitions reflects the growing concern among retirees and near-retirees nationwide—and underscores the power of grassroots activism in the fight to protect Social Security.
