The Social Security Administration (SSA) has issued a warning about a new phishing scam aimed at retirees. Scammers are sending emails that appear to come from the SSA, complete with the agency’s logo and a fake “letter of reinstatement.”
These messages ask recipients to click links or provide personal information — a clear red flag. They try to instill fear by falsely claiming that the targeted individual’s Social Security number has been compromised. They also try to overwhelm the recipient with details, making the scam feel more real.
Important reminder: The SSA will never ask for personal information via email, text, or social media. If you receive one of these messages, do not respond or click any links.
Scams like this are designed to exploit confusion and fear, especially among older Americans who rely on their benefits. Staying alert and informed is the best defense.
If you’re unsure whether a communication is real, contact the SSA directly through their official channels.
We’ll continue sharing updates to help protect the benefits retirees have earned – and the peace of mind they deserve.
