Can You be Retired and Employed?

When we talk about employment, it’s often thought of as a mutually exclusive counterpart to retirement.

But can you be both? Technically, yes.

This stat tells us that last year, about 22 percent of retirement-age seniors were still working. And a small percentage of those were still working while claiming benefits. It’s fine for these two classifications to overlap under the right conditions.

But what would be the purpose of claiming your benefits while working? You could be looking to double up your short-term earnings or use your benefits as an investment source. Some people also prefer to ease their way from one phase of life to the next, exiting the workforce gradually while giving themselves time to acclimate to retirement.
