The Social Security Administration (SSA) has hit a milestone, but not the good kind. Social Security payment mistakes have recently topped $1.1 billion, and the agency is struggling to work through the backlog of cases.
This issue has been going on for years, and recently has made headlines. Take this case, of a widow who was forced to pay back money she was sent by mistake. Like many seniors, she was unaware of the mistake, and was facing homelessness trying to make repayments.
Some of these errors have been corrected. In addition, repayments have been capped at 10 percent of benefits. A new reporting method has been suggested to stop future errors from occurring at all. But still, there are many cases and errors that need to be addressed.
