Beware the ‘Claim Your COLA’ Scam

With the new Cost-of-Living Adjustment taking effect, scammers are taking advantage of the news.

Scammers do this by sending emails, texts, and phone calls claiming you need to “claim” or “activate” your COLA increase. Don’t fall for it.

You don’t need to do anything to receive your COLA — it’s automatically applied by the Social Security Administration. The SSA will never call, email, or message you asking for personal information, payment, or verification to release your benefits.

If you ever receive a message that seems suspicious — even if it looks official — do not click any links or share personal details. Hang up or delete the message. Then, contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 or visit their website to confirm what’s legitimate.

Stay alert, protect your information, and remind others that the real SSA doesn’t need you to claim what you’ve already earned.
