Is Generative AI a Risk to the Social Security Administration?
Looking back at the top technologies of 2023, generative AI is an easy candidate to top the list. Its prominence has continued, and even accelerated throughout the first quarter of 2024.
This was to be expected. After all, it has countless incredible functions and has been a helpful force in many different types of organizations. Small businesses, major corporations, nonprofits, schools, and more have all used this tool.
It can create content, conduct research, support automation, and more. But some wonder if its power is too great at the moment. Especially for the type of sensitive data the SSA holds, it may be better for them to hold off on using this technology for now.
An SSA spokesperson told FedScoop that “The temporary block was a necessary precaution…” The aim is to ensure the data and systems remain secure first, before the agency can assess the true power of AI. This is a common trend more organizations are taking. They’ve been encouraged to test the technology slowly, rather than completely banning it or avoiding it.
