Survey Reveals Majority of Seniors Suffer from Financial Stress

One would think in the world’s most prosperous nation, seniors would be able to enjoy a dignified retirement.

After all, seniors have faithfully paid into Social Security for decades. Their payments should be adjusted for inflation, giving them everything back that they paid in, so they can enjoy their later years.

But a recent survey shows this isn’t the reality for many people. According to the University of Michigan’s National Poll on Healthy Aging, a whopping 53 percent of seniors face financial stress. Around the same number cut back on expenses including recreational activities, gas, and even utilities!

This troubling statistic shows us that policymakers must do better for America’s retirees. Here at the Council for Retirement Security, we fight to restore Social Security and ensure payments are fairly adjusted for inflation.
