Will the 2027 COLA Be Higher Than the 2026 COLA?

The Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026 was only 2.8 percent, a figure that disappointed many recipients. Now, many people, including our staff here at the Council for Retirement Security, are looking ahead.

This increase, meant to help retirees and others reliant on Social Security benefits to keep up with rising living costs, fell short in today’s economy. Even those who are financially affluent have contributed to this program and deserve to be repaid with higher COLAs that accurately reflect inflation.

The question is, will the 2027 COLA, which will be announced in a few months from now, be higher?

The 2026 COLA Barely Helped – Will the 2027 COLA Go Further?

The 2.8 percent adjustment from last year provided a slight boost, but failed to cover the full impact of higher prices for essential goods and services. Those who rely on Social Security often face fixed incomes, making every dollar critical for their daily living.

This modest increase raised concerns about the long-term viability of Social Security as a safety net. Many recipients expected a higher adjustment, given the strain that inflation has placed on household budgets in recent years.

Unfortunately, this adjustment did not reflect the true rise in the cost of living for millions of Americans. As the 2027 COLA approaches, most seniors are hoping for a fairer number that truly reflects their contributions to the program. Even if you don’t depend on these benefits to live, you still deserve to be paid back in full.

The government has a responsibility to ensure that Social Security keeps pace with economic realities. Just as important, it also has a responsibility to keep its legal and financial promises to retirees. As we move forward, discussions about reform and future adjustments will be essential to preserve the purchasing power of those who depend on these benefits.

But what’s the best thing you can do now to help boost the 2027 Social Security COLA? Make your voice heard! Sign our petition to raise the COLA. There’s still plenty of time to make a change before the official announcement this fall.
