A Belchertown man has been found guilty of stealing nearly $50,000 in public funds.

The ruling comes after a three-day trial. As a result of being found guilty, he could serve up to a decade behind bars.

His charge also carries three years of supervised release following his jail sentence, along with a $250,000 fine. The fine typically maxes out at this number, or double the amount of funds fraudulently acquired, whichever is greater.

What do you think of the sentence? Will this deter future Social Security fraud? Have you or someone you know ever been impacted by a scam that threatened your benefits?
