Readers of the Council for Retirement Security may have seen our recent post, reporting the Social Security Administration (SSA) making the decision to end paper checks.
Officials announced the switch to entirely electronic payments was planned to cut waste, reduce fraud, and improve efficiency. However, it’s now being reported the SSA is reversing this decision.
As reported here, SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano agreed to continue issuing paper checks on July 23. This comes just over a week after the decision to end them was announced. Why the switch back? Many people complained about the move, saying that some beneficiaries don’t have bank access or the means to easily access and manage electronic payments.
