Public sector workers teach us, deliver our mail, and keep us safe. The many other functions they provide often go unnoticed or unthanked. But if anything, they at least deserve a great retirement.
However, some Social Security rules have made this tough. The Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset created big problems for public sector workers. CNBC shares this story of a long-time USPS worker, whose Social Security benefits were half what they expected. Even though they’d accumulated enough work credits, their benefits were cut unfairly.
However, the Social Security Fairness Act was recently passed to fix this problem. Not only does it remove the WEP and GPO, but it offers retroactive payments on benefits from December 2023 to qualifying individuals. Check out the current payout tally here.
