Could a Payroll Change Stop Social Security Overpayments?

Social Security overpayments have been a serious problem for a while now. We’ve covered cases where these issues have left people facing serious stress and financial hardships.

Those who were overpaid without knowing it were on the hook to pay the money back. This has resulted in a cruel twist of fate. Social Security, a program founded to provide financial stability to those in need, has now taken it away.

But a new policy could be the answer. The Payroll Information Exchange (PIE) would see payroll information being shared with government departments. Those behind the policy say it will reduce the reporting errors that have led to many overpayment problems.
